Make each quote answer the same questions

Send each contractor the same description of the household, existing equipment, access and the problem you want solved. Ask for a specific model and a written installation scope. Quotes based on different assumptions cannot be compared fairly.

Separate a simple replacement from a conversion to another technology. A tankless or heat-pump proposal may include different work around utilities, venting, drainage or space.

Look for what is missing

Check removal and disposal, equipment delivery, protection of finished areas, connection changes, permit responsibilities and commissioning. Ask which items are allowances and what can trigger extra charges.

A warranty description should distinguish the manufacturer’s equipment terms from any installation workmanship coverage. Ask who handles service and whether parts and labour are treated differently.

Compare the result you are buying

Ask how the recommendation addresses the current shortfall: capacity, recovery, waiting time or a deteriorating tank. Have assumptions about household growth and simultaneous use recorded.

Keep the accepted quote, final invoice, model and serial number, manuals and any inspection records together. This makes future maintenance and replacement planning easier.

Common questions

Should I choose solely by installed price?

Compare equivalent equipment and scope first, then consider maintenance, service support and realistic operating costs.
