Gas vs electric vs heat-pump hot water tanks

Compare installation scope, energy use and household demand before choosing a gas, electric resistance or heat-pump tank in the Lower Mainland.

In this guide

There is no universal cheapest tank

Compare three distinct options: gas storage, electric resistance storage and heat-pump storage. The best fit depends on the existing utilities, location and demand, plus the complete installation and operating costs. A fuel label alone cannot establish the lowest lifetime cost.

Ask for model-specific performance information and an operating estimate with its assumptions shown. Use current utility tariffs and your expected use; avoid treating a generic online saving as a quote for your home.

Gas: check the full combustion installation

A gas tank proposal should identify the venting arrangement and required changes to gas connections, combustion air or nearby equipment. Ask how the proposed recovery supports the household’s peak period.

If converting away from gas, ask what is included for the redundant equipment and connections. Whether other gas appliances remain also matters when comparing ongoing utility charges.

Electric resistance: check capacity and connections

An electric resistance tank avoids a combustion vent at the heater but still requires a suitable circuit, plumbing and service access. Ask for the voltage, input and delivery information of the actual model.

A similar tank volume does not prove identical recovery. Have the installer compare your busiest use period and identify any electrical work included in the price.

Heat pump: compare the room and operating mode

A heat-pump tank moves heat into stored water and may include resistance backup. Ask whether the location suits the model and whether air, noise, condensate or electrical work is needed. Compare expected performance in the intended operating mode.

Do not count a rebate until the administrator confirms the relevant equipment and project conditions. Keep incentive assumptions separate from the base installation comparison.

Ask every quote to answer the same questions

Request equipment cost, installation changes, removal, permits, commissioning and exclusions. Ask what routine care and warranty requirements apply. Compare operating estimates over the same period using the same household demand.
