Start with the replacement decision

Before choosing a heat-pump tank, describe the problem you want the replacement to solve. Are you replacing a failing heater, changing fuel or trying to improve capacity? Separate domestic hot water from space heating in the brief. A proposal needs to identify which system is changing and which existing appliances will remain.

Understand the equipment category

Heat-pump water heaters move heat from air into stored water; hybrid electric models can also use resistance elements. They are storage systems, so the household’s pattern of demand still matters. Ask how the quoted model will meet consecutive uses in the proposed operating mode rather than treating the word hybrid as a guarantee of endless hot water.

Make the location part of the quote

Have the installer document available air, operating temperatures, clearance, sound, condensate disposal and maintenance access against the selected manufacturer’s instructions. Generic search-result figures cannot approve a utility cupboard. Include the delivery and removal route, doorways and any building approval or shutdown arrangements in the assessment.

Ask for comparable performance information

Give every bidder the same peak-use brief: occupants, simultaneous showers, large baths and appliances. Request the equipment capacity, first-hour delivery, recovery assumptions and backup operation. Ask what changes in colder room conditions or during high demand. Compare the proposed systems using that same scenario, with operating costs based on stated assumptions rather than a promised percentage saving.

Price the whole installation

Request separate descriptions of equipment, removal, plumbing, electrical supply, drainage, permits and commissioning. Confirm who coordinates each qualified trade and what the exclusions mean. A gas-to-electric conversion and a replacement electric tank may have different scopes. Product-only online prices are not reliable totals for either job.

Verify support before committing

The current Better Homes BC rules have a separate water-heater category with qualifying equipment and registered-contractor conditions. Check your existing fuel and household eligibility, and obtain the required program confirmation before installation. Do not transfer a headline rebate for a furnace or space-heating heat pump onto a water-heater quote. Official terms, rather than this guide, determine approval.
