Monthly visual checks

Without removing covers or touching controls, look for water, corrosion, damaged piping, blocked air openings, or storage crowding the appliance. Note meaningful changes in sound, temperature, or water colour.

Keep combustible materials away. If water is escaping, avoid wet electrical components and arrange qualified help.

Seasonal household checks

Test smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms at the intervals in their instructions. In freezing weather, visually check outdoor intake and exhaust terminations for obstruction without altering them.

Keep floor drains clear. Never cap or block a temperature-and-pressure relief discharge pipe.

Records to keep

Keep the model and serial number, installation date if known, manuals, invoices, permits, and service notes. A photo of the rating plate can help with parts or replacement discussions.

Requirements vary by model, so use the instructions for the installed appliance.

Work for qualified professionals

Flushing, anode work, valve service, burner service, electrical testing, gas work, venting changes, and repairs can create serious hazards. Gas, electrical, plumbing, drainage, and venting work must be completed by appropriately qualified professionals and follow the requirements that apply to the home and municipality.
