The practical difference

A standing or storage tank holds heated water for use. A tankless water heater heats water as it flows through the appliance. Storage selection centres on available delivery and recovery; tankless selection centres on output at the required temperature rise. Neither is automatically the best choice for every household.

Choose around the busiest period

Describe both simultaneous and consecutive uses. A household with overlapping showers needs a different assessment from one that mainly fills a large bath. Ask the contractor to show how the selected model meets that pattern.

For tankless equipment, do not use the maximum flow headline without its temperature conditions. For storage equipment, do not use tank volume without recovery and delivery information.

Compare the conversion, not just the appliance

Tankless equipment may reduce floor space, but wall space, service access and utility or venting work remain part of the decision. A storage replacement also requires model compatibility and access checks.

Ask for the complete scope, including any gas or electrical upgrades, drainage, removal, permits and commissioning. In strata homes, clarify approvals before changing technologies.

Keep your actual goal visible

Write down whether the priority is more simultaneous supply, fewer shortages, usable space or a planned replacement before failure. Ask each quote to explain how its proposed system addresses that goal and what compromises remain.
