The short answer
A heat-pump water heater uses electricity to move heat from surrounding air into water stored in a tank. It works on the same heat-transfer principle as a refrigerator, with the useful heat delivered to the water instead of removed from food.
It is still a storage water heater. Tank capacity, recovery and the pattern of hot-water use matter, even when the heating method is more efficient than electric resistance alone.
What the main components do
A fan draws air across a heat exchanger. A refrigerant circuit absorbs heat, a compressor raises its temperature, and that heat transfers to the stored water. The air leaving the equipment is cooler. The unit also needs appropriate condensate management.
Many hybrid models include resistance elements to assist when demand or conditions call for it. Available operating modes and the balance between heat-pump and resistance operation depend on the selected model.
What this means for your daily routine
Tell the installer about consecutive showers and other uses that overlap. Ask how the model performs in its recommended normal mode and how a higher-demand mode changes operation. Avoid treating the advertised tank volume as a promise of an unlimited sequence of showers.
Ask for a demonstration of the user controls and a written explanation of routine care. Keep the product manual with the installation records so future occupants can understand the selected settings.
Check the installation location before shopping
A Lower Mainland address alone does not establish whether the installation room is suitable. Have its temperature conditions, airflow, noise, drainage and electrical supply checked against the exact model. Include any required changes in the quote.

Is it the same as electric resistance heating?
No. The heat pump transfers environmental heat; resistance elements produce heat directly from electricity. Hybrid units can contain both.
Does it provide space heating too?
Do not assume so. A domestic heat-pump water heater is selected to heat water; combination and space-heating systems are separate design questions.
