Fit and supply must both work
A smaller tank may solve an access or cupboard problem, but it still needs to support the intended use. Compare the proposed model’s delivery and recovery with your busiest period before agreeing to reduce storage. Small homes can still have demanding fixtures or overlapping showers.
Start by explaining why a smaller heater is being considered: limited height, floor area, removal access or an effort to reclaim space. Different constraints can point to different equipment configurations.
Describe the demand that cannot be missed
List consecutive showers, bath use and overlapping appliances. Tell the installer what the current tank handles successfully and where it falls short. Ask whether the proposed option depends on changing household routines.
If the smaller unit is intended only for a sink or separate work area, state that limitation clearly. A point-of-use application should not be presented as whole-dwelling supply.
Compare the complete footprint
Ask for dimensions and required access around the selected equipment, including connection and maintenance space. Measure the route into the room as well as the cupboard. For tankless alternatives, request the utility and venting scope before assuming they save usable space.
For a strata property, include any approval and shutdown process. Ask the installer to verify the model against current instructions rather than approving it from a photograph alone.
Get two feasible options in writing
Request one option that keeps the established supply pattern and a compact alternative if feasible. Compare installation work, delivery, recovery, maintenance access and exclusions. This makes the space saving and any trade-off explicit.
